2013 Andremily Syrah No. 2, USA, California, Wine Review

This was the second year for Andremily and it was nice to try one with ten plus years on it. Great showing. This was decanted for a couple hours prior to serving. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is deep with black raspberries, black pepper, slight roasted meats and roasted herbs, and some spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Still youthful. Flavors of black raspberries with some blueberries, spice, black pepper and char. Complex layers. Long finish. This is nice on its own and will work well with with most foods (not seafood). It worked nice with a cheese course. Drink over the next five to ten years.

This was surprisingly tight and after opening, it was recorked and consumed the following evening. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is deep with black raspberries, milk chocolate, black pepper, slight violets and slight roasted herbs. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is drinking nicely but not a huge Syrah. Plenty of ripeness though. Flavors of black raspberries, milk chocolate, and spice. Slight char. Good finish. This drinks well on its own and would work well with spiced meats or fowl. Drink over the next five to eight years.

The devil is in the details and with Cuviason’s Diablo Syrah, the details are key to an exceptional wine. Syrah often is mis-treated and most Syrahs on the market are fairly benign. But winemaker Steve Rogstad coaxes much out of these 21-year-old vines grown is less than optimal soils. A smooth viscosity leads to plum, huckleberry, black cherry, red currant, and light pomegranate notes, with back notes of young tobacco leaf and new leather. This is not a timid wine, but a sensuous one that is definitely meant to work with food, as it’s a little heavier on the alcohol.

Whitehall Lane Winery has a focus on red wines, more Cabernet driven wines. This 2019 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel offers notes of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, boysenberry, and huckleberry. The fruit is fully structured by moderate to mature tannins, the use of judicious oak, and a mild acidity. There are back notes of vanilla, sandalwood, and light campfire. This is definitely a food friendly red wine to pair with a various dishes, but it’s also a wine that makes you remember how good Napa wines can be when they’re treated with restraint.

Decoy Unlimited 2021 Alexander Valley Merlot

This offers nicely balanced red fruit with minimal oak, solid acidity and decent tannic structure. Not an easy thing to find in a Merlot, and a Merlot at this price. Black cherry, black berry, huckleberry, red currant, light cedar and vanilla notes dominate and this is a very comprehensive wine. Mainly Merlot, there are small percentages of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Malbec. It was aged for 14 months in French oak, only 40% of which was new, hence the light wood touch. What this ultimately offers is a robust Merlot that is well worth the price.
