Wine To Go Buy This Week - Spottswoode Estate 2014 Sauvignon Blanc – 90 Points

Spottswoode Estate has long been one of those wineries that receives high acclaim but less commensurate public attention. Winemaker Aron Weinkauf crafts beautiful expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, but also an impressive Sauvignon Blanc. Comprised of 73% Sauvignon Blanc and 27% Sauvignon Musque from six different vineyard sites in Napa, Sonoma and Carneros, his creation is an inviting wine.

This is a Sauvignon Blanc from the eastern edge of the Loire Valley.  Green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is waxy with lemon and some salinity.  Tight.  Slightly oily texture.  On the palate, peaches with salinity and slight minerality.  Moderate acidity.  Good finish.  This is nice on its own but better with food.  Seafoods and lighter foods would be best.  A nice pairing would be grilled fish.  Drink over the next few years.

This is a Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend from Napa.  Light green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is slightly grassy with a touch of lemon verbena.  Very clean.  Medium bodied.  Slightly viscous.  Good crisp acidity.  On the palate, the lemon is a bit more pronounced with a steely quality.  Long finish.  Refreshing.  This is a very nice white that drinks easy on its own and will work well with lighter foods.  A nice wine for Pork Chops.  Drink over the next three to five years.

Very pale slivery/clear/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is nice with yellow grapefruits, salinity, and slight green herbal notes.  Light bodied.  Slightly creamy texture.  Moderate acidity.  On the palate, this has some fruit but not sweet nor ripe.  Grapefruits with a bit of green.  Good finish.  This is easy drinking but is better with food.  It would work well with gefilte fish and did go well with "vegetarian gefilte".  Drink over the next couple of years.

This is from the "middle" sections of the Loire Valley in France.  It is a Sauvignon Blanc that is different from other versions made around the world.  Light golden in color, clear and bright.  The nose is mineral driven with just a hint of limes.  Clean.  Medium bodied.  Good acidity.  On the palate, the minerality comes thru.  Nice finish.  This wine needs food.  It works with cheeses and would be great with chicken salad.  Drink up.

Nice to revisit this wine.  From a 750ml.   Amber in color, clear and bright.  The nose has honey, ginger and peach.  Slightly viscous.  The palate is sweet with good acidity.  Flavors of honey and peach.  Long finish.  Drink over the  next ten to fifteen years.  It will works well with short bread cookies.

Green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is great but not blowsy.  Melon, slight citrus and flint.  Light to medium bodied.  Crisp.  On the palate, this drinks easy but it also has some persistence.  Flavors of melon and lemon.  Nice finish.  This is very nice for drinking alone and will work well with cheeses or salads (such as crab or chicken).  Drink over the next few years.

Made with Estate grown fruit.  Light green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is nice with limes, green apples and a touch of lemon.  Medium bodied.  Nicely balanced.  Refreshing.  On the palate, limes are the forefront with a touch of lemons on the finish.  This is easy drinking but has some substance.  It drinks well on its own and will work well with lighter foods.  A nice summer lunch wine.  Drink over the next couple of years although it is a bit past prime already.
