Louis Pommery started as a Champagne house crafting traditional Champagnes in the French style. Until now. They have just released a sparkling wine made in the classic French style, but with grapes grown in England. The source of the vineyards is in southern England, Hampshire, where chalk is the dominant element of the soil, not unlike those of Reims, where Pommery is located. And counties like Hampshire benefit from a cool maritime climate, one that’s moderated by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel. Therefore, the majority of Chardonnay in the blend contributes elegance and acidity, while Pinot Noir and Pinot Menuier add structure and fruit. This Brut offers lots of yellow citrus flavors, is lighter stylistically while still retaining bright and energetic qualities. Lemon lime, Asian pear, white peach, delicate baked bread and a light but ideal effervescence command the initial sip. It’s softness and roundness in the palate and excellent acidity will make this an ideal companion for a variety of foods. It avoids the sometimes abrasive tartness that other sparkling wines have and instead is a very enjoyable wine to drink, offering flavor and a price that makes it an easy (new) choice to make.
