When winemaker Charlie Gilmore started Cormorant Cellars in 2018 it was so named because seeing Cormorants was common during his trips to Monterey. Cormorants are birds that fly but they are also divers. His wines are similar, they straddle old world and new world styles. This is an enjoyable blend of 72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot. It’s dry-farmed from a cool climate vineyard in the underappreciated Santa Cruz Mountains, using older neutral barrels for aging. This allows the earthy fruit to shine. It offers soft black berry and red berry fruits, there is lithe currant, red raspberry, pomegranate, loganberry with quiet notes of lavender, sandalwood and black cherry on the finish. This drinks well, the tannins being soft and the acidity apparent, but not aggressive and the overall experience being enjoyable. ORIGIN: Santa Cruz Mountains. ALCOHOL: 13.47%
