True to the region, there is an enviable earthiness to Santa Cruz Pinot Noirs; a slightly rough brambly character that differentiates this AVA from all others in California. Calera has been sourcing Santa Cruz fruit since 2015 and this high elevation vineyards procures stellar fruit. This offers red raspberry, mild black cherry, earthy wet stone notes, dried wildflowers, a touch of lavender and cracked black pepper. The acidity and tannic structure work well together to support the darker fruit. This style of Pinot Noir helps to redefine the category and brings a fresh perspective to Pinot that it solely needs. There’s nothing wrong with a bright strawberry drive fruity Pinot Noir, but the level of acidity and earthiness in this makes a for a truly different Pinot Noir experience. The unpretentious feel of this wine truly expresses its site, and that’s one of the reasons Calera wines are so fascinating – you can taste different styles nd see just how diverse expressions of Pinot can be.
