Though this needs a brief time to open up, – 20 minutes or so – once poured, you’ll be rewarded with bright flavors of black cherry, strawberry, candied pomegranate, plum and boysenberry. There is also a light earthiness to this wine, a deeper, richer part that holds the bright fruit in check, along with a buoyant acidity. Sweet vanilla, sandalwood and dried Alpine wildflowers round out the flavors. The majority of the fruit is Russian River Valley, however a portion was harvested from the Sonoma Coast, hence the earthier notes. Smartly, the wine was aged for a scant nine months in neutral barrels, therefore the diversity of fruit shines through. Additionally the complexity of the wine is supported by the use of eight different clones of Pinot. Alma de Cattleya has produced very good wines for a while now and this is no exception – an affordable Pinot Noir that exemplifies Sonoma County.
