2022 Clos Fantine Faugères Cuvée Courtiol, France, Languedoc, Wine Review

This wine is mostly Mourvedre with some Carignan from southern France. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, spice, new oak and some black cherry. There is also some stink/funk going on here and it would be interesting to see if this is a representative bottle. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is VERY tart and also a bit disjointed. It did come together a bit with some air and more so with some food. Some Boysenberry flavors. Drying finish. This desperately needs some food to work with the acidity. Heavy food such as Lasagna would be a good choice. Drink over the next five years.

A collaboration between Gérard Bertrand, and Jon and Jesse Bon Jovi. HW Wine Company is essentially a company that commissioned this wine to be made in France to celebrate the good life. Light salmon pink in color. The nose is all about watermelon and strawberries. It has a nice texture. Nice acidity. This wine is really all about summer fruit. Not a lot of depth or complexity but tasty and easy drinking. While it is probably made as a summer sipper it went well with a summery watermelon salad. Fun wine.

This is a producer who first got recognition for their fantastic Gigondas wines. They have since expanded their releases all over the southern and northern Rhone. Their Chateauneuf is also stellar. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 10% each of Syrah and Cinsault. Deep ruby in color, purple at the core. The nose is tight upon opening. With air, raspberries, black raspberries and mineral/gravel emerge. On the palate, this is delicious. Lots of black cherry fruit with some raspberries. Medium tannins. Bright acidity. A fine showing for this wine. At age 18, it is drinking well with plenty of time left. This bottle was decanted for sediment and served. It could have used an hour in the decanter or more to really open. The last glass was the best. Deeper ruby in color, mostly opaque. The nose is clean for the most part. Cherries, raspberries, some earthiness and nice minerality on the nose. On the palate, this is medium to full bodied. Plenty of depth with nice layering in the glass. An outstanding CdP. A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and the rest Counoise, Vaccarèse and Muscardin. This is ripe, juicy and delicious if not the "classic" CdP in style. Purple in color, ruby swirls. On the nose this has boysenberries, sandalwood, char and slight floral notes. On the palate, this is juicy with big boysenberry fruit. There is a nice under layer of spice. Long finish. One of those wines that each sip tastes so good you want to have another. It will be interesting to see this age and lose the baby fat.
