2021 Gentleman Farmer Wines Rosé, USA, California, Wine Review

A very interesting wine. It is 90% Pinot Noir, 7% Merlot, and 3% Pinot Meunier. The website indicates that the fruit is Sonoma Coast, but the bottle is devoid of info except carrying a California designation. Deep light ruby/orange in color, clear and bright. Very pretty. The nose is intense with rhubarb, apples and watermelon. Medium bodied. On the palate, watermelon, raspberries and cherries. Long finish. A very satisfying Rose that should be quite food friendly with everything from Salmon to a steak. Drink over the next couple of years.

Top California Pinot Noir: Which California Wine Producers Make the Best Pinot Noir?

California has actually been making outstanding wines from the Pinot Noir grape for a long time. Sure, not long in the Burgundian sense but going back at least to the middle of the last century there were good bottles of Pinot Noir being produced in California. Not many to be sure, but there were some. Starting slowly, in the 1990’s, and then exploding when the movie Sideways came out, there are now more and more offerings of good to excellent Pinot Noir being produced in California.

Wines to Go Buy This Week: Sonoma Pinot Noir by La Follette, MacPhail, and Freeman

Since I wrote last week about how much I (used to) hate chardonnay , this week I am turning attention to the varietal I love: pinot noir. Friends and acquaintances frequently ask me for my favorite wine producers -and the list is long- so I am going to focus this week on my favorite Sonoma pinot noir producers. There are numerous producers of fantastic pinot in Sonoma so I'm sure I will get plenty of emails from people wondering how I could leave out so and so or who are incredulous that my recommendations exclude "less expensive" options. So let me respond in advance: The threshold for inclusion on this list is that the wine must be in regular rotation in my house and be the "go to" bottle of Sonoma Pinot Noir to serve to guests or to uncork to celebrate small victories (a concept I enthusiastically embrace..... life is too short not to celebrate good days with a fantastic bottle of wine. Who wants to die with a huge collection of great wine aging in the basement?). Must a good Sonoma pinot noir cost $40+? Of course not, though so often they do. This is made from 100% Pinot Noir. It has a deep ruby/orange color, clear and bright. A bit darker than typical roses. On the palate, there are strawberries, cherry powdered candy (li-a-maid?), with a slight tea and gravel. Medium bodied. Lovely texture. On the palate, the strawberries come thru with some red apple notes and underlying gravel. A bit of orange candy on the finish along with a slightly bitter orange pith note. Tasted over two nights, it was better on night two which is rare for a Rose. This is concentrated. It drinks great on its own and will work well with lighter

The allure of Kosta Browne wines has been that, though they are very expressive wines, they are subtle. Shunning the in-your-face-Pinot-with-a-dash-of-Syrah, these wines are meant to reflect the place where they are grown, and the proof of this is that they taste like it.
