Light golden in color. The nose is clean with slight lemon notes. There is some lumber on the nose too. On the palate, this has little fruit but some. There is a bitterness. Decent acidity. At around $8, it drinks ok with or without food. No obvious faults but nothing amazing either.
A nice compliment to their Cabernet. This is an inexpensive Chardonnay that strikes a mostly middle ground. It is a good choice for large parties or the casual wine lover. Light to medium golden in color. The nose has vanilla, caramel, and slight baked apples. On the palate, the apples are a bit fresher while the vanilla and caramel remain. Broad with an acidic bite. Just a bit of butter. Easy to drink on its own. Made for immediate consumption.
I have had a fair amount of wine from this producer over the years with various results for my tastes. Sometimes, the wines carry too much oak and others they are amazing. No doubt, some of the difference is due to the fruit and some the vintage. And tastes vary. This one straddles the line for me and goes right up to the edge but doesn't cross that line. Most of us have bottles laying around the house that either people brought over or they somehow ended up with. So is the story of this wine. It was actually won in a raffle. Initially, the idea of actually drinking some cheap California Chardonnay seemed ridiculous. Still, rather than be dismissive, the plan was to drink it. After about a month of staring at the bottle, the time finally came. And that good people, is why we need to open the bottle and taste. From a 375ml bottle. Rhys makes some of the best Chards in California, but this is from purchased fruit and so carries the Alesia name. It does seem like the oak treatment is different as well. This is a sold Chardonnay but not nearly in the class of the Rhys Chards. Light gold/green in color. The nose is nice with minerals, spice, slight lemons and slight lumber. On the palate, the minerals and lumber carry thru. Some lemon. Lean in body with good acidity. This will work with a lots of foods.
