2015 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah Foothills Reserve, Washington, Walla Walla, Wine Review

This is 100% Syrah from Washington state. Inky purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is boysenberry, black pepper, slight roasted meats and a hint of burnt rubber. Medium to full bodied. Delicious. On the palate, lush black raspberry fruit with underlying char. Also some black pepper. Very smooth. Long finish. This is still young and will no doubt continue to improve for another five to seven years. It should drink well for ten to fifteen more after that. Drinks well on its own and will work with bigger foods especially roasts or off the grill.

Reynvaan makes some great Syrah's in Washington state. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with boysenberries, slight burnt rubber, black pepper and slight bacon fat. Full bodied. Nice acidity. On the palate, the boysenberries come thru over a nice minerality. Long finish. This is drinking well right now. it is not robust but very concentrated. Drink over the next eight to ten years. This will work well with Indian food or stews.

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

This was very good, but given the price (around $100), quite disappointing. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is earthy with some funk and meaty tones. Also some black raspberries. On the palate, this has a sour cherry note. It is not to dissimilar for red cherry soda with a bit or sweetness to match the sour fruit. Medium bodied. An almost aquarium note, so perhaps this was poorly stored during shipment (the storage on the receiving end was fine). In any event, it was good with a northern Rhone, cooler climate quality to it with sour cherry fruit. Would work with food.

This has really opened nicely since I last tried it. Still young, but delicious. Perhaps the best wine from Washington that I have had. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, boysenberries, black cherries, black olives and tarragon. No burnt rubber that sometimes shows up in Washington Syrah. Full bodied. Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better.
