Shafer Hillside Select is royalty for Napa Cabernets.  If Napa wines were classified, it would be a first growth.  It is made in reasonably large numbers and the top quality is consistent from vintage to vintage.  At age 17, this one is still developing but no harm opening now.  Purple in color, opaque and bright.  The nose is great with cassis, graphite, spice, slight dark chocolate and hints of char.  Full bodied.  Medium tannins.  Great acidity and balance.  On the palate, this is deep.  It is also delicious.  Flavors of cassis with a bit of spice and earthiness.  Long finish.  This should easily go another ten to fifteen years.  Great on its own, this would work well with many dishes.  A nice choice with prime rib.
