The Napa Valley is, in reality, multiple microcosms of grape growing. One of the best has always been the Stags Leap District. Comprised mainly of cabernet sauvignon, there is also 13% merlot, 6% petite verdot, 3% malbec and 2% cabernet franc added in to this wine. Firm tannins give way to blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and boysenberry notes. The oak program is so subtle that you barely even realize it’s there, the tannins and fruit being the dominant experience. The tannins keep the suspension between the fruit and the structure of the wine making it enjoyable. Aged 21 months in a scant 32% new French oak, this truly expresses Stags Leap.
