For Chappellet, Pritchard Hill is their prime grape growing spot. The fruit pulled from this piece of land has continuously been well-tended, grapes that offer great structure and flavor, even before they are pressed into wine. Comprised mainly of Cabernet, there is 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec blended in. The result is a wine that offers dark red fruits like blackberry, boysenberry and black cherry, along with a lightly spicy cracked pepper, subtle herbal and wildflower notes. Tactically, this is seamless and soft. The aging of this for 22 months in all new French oak does exactly what wood is intended to do - provide additional flavor, structure and ageability without overwhelming the fruit. Certainly this is a wine you might choose to age for a decade or more, and you would be well rewarded. But it’s also a beautifully balanced wine that is ready to drink now.
